Figures Drawing

After a lot a lot of practice, I am finally somewhat happy with my ability to do action poses from lots of different angles and for lots of different positions. I am still working on extreme bird's-eye and worm's-eye perspective, but I'm happy with where I am right now.

I'm home for the holidays. I practiced a bunch this morning, and I left a bunch of drawings at my condo, but I thought I'd put the drawings I brought home onto this page.

I'm a little put out by how much better I can draw things with a reference than from memory, but I will just keep practicing. That's how it is.

This is a drawing I made from memory of the main character from Tron Uprising. You can see the foreshortening reference box I did around him to try and get the up-angle correct.

And this is a drawing I made of the same shot with the actual shot as a reference in front of me. Obviously, you can tell the difference.

I was debating whether or not to post this picture here. There are a few competing perspectives. For example, her hand looks as if it's lying flat on the ground, but her torso is clearly leaning up. I thought about correcting them, but I decided to leave it and move on.

What especially helped me with figure drawing was referencing and redrawing images from Persona 5 promotional material. It's a heavily anime-inspired video game, for those who haven't heard of it. The picture above is one of the more helpful figures that I used while learning.

This is a drawing I did after the Persona practice. I like the small angle it's at here.

These next few poses are all of the character Deku from the excellent (amazing, beautiful, meritorious, incredible) anime My Hero Academia. They aren't perfect, but they're so much better than what I've done in the past. They were all from memory, which makes me very happy.

What a mess. I might try to redraw this later. He needs to be twisted with his left side facing the camera more.

The drawings in the image above are the character Genos from the anime One Punch Man during his mock-fight with Saitama. Obviously the proportions and details are nothing like the original, but I'm happy with the poses.

Similarly, this is a drawing from memory of Saitama's fight with Boros from the same anime. I'm very happy with how much energy Boros has in this. Though again, it pales in comparison to the actual show.

The above drawing is a sketch I did because I wanted to draw someone on all fours. The character design is based on Princess Illana from the 2010 animated series Sym-Bionic Titan. There's a scene in the 7th episode where she escorts some high schoolers through an air-vent.

The image above is just a hypothetical sky-diving scene using the same character design as before. It could better, but at least the central idea is there.

This is a sketch I did of Harry Potter from memory. I'm very happy with it. It's the kind of poses I've wanted to do for a long time.

Self-portrait of me kneeling.

The above and below images are based on the classic Flaming Lips song Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. It's been a longtime dream of mine to draw comics based on the song, and today I actually did a little work on it.

Praise God. God is good. Lord, lead me where you want me to go, and help me to do what you want me to do. Thank you for coming down here to save us. Amen.

Digital Lighting

This is a lighting exercise I'm working on for my graduate Digital Lighting class. My teacher called me out specifically because of how he liked this image. That made me feel happy, so I thought I would include it on this blog. It's not the final image, but I thought I would put it here anyways.

This was done in Maya 2022 software. We were given the "model" of the hallway and asked to light it different ways. I'm using all "area lights" with an "aiAtmosphericVolume" fog effect. What really helped me was figuring out how to use the "Spread" attribute in Maya to manipulate the lights. It really gives you a lot more control.

Being able to make this makes me really happy, especially because I was struggling with digital lighting a lot before this. It's really incredible how much knowing one trick from online can make all the difference with these kinds of software.

Praise God. This work is yours as much as it is mine. Thank you. God's will be done.
